Importing Content Using The Feeds Module

This lesson shows how to automatically import content from RSS or Atom feeds with the help of the Feeds module. The process relies on cron to run periodically so that the feed processor can check for new content. The feed processor creates regular Drupal nodes from the items contained in the feed. You can choose to have the imported items published by default or not. Once the items have been imported as nodes you can then create custom paths to those using Pathauto and/or customize the display using the Views module.

Creating A Custom Page Using Panels

This video shows you how to create a custom page for your site using the Panels module. You can use Panels to help you make pages (including a front page) that include a variety of content from your site including content that exists in views, blocks and nodes. The Panels module is dependent on the Chaos Tool Suite module.

Running Cron On Dreamhost

This short video shows you how to create a cron job using the Dreamhost web panel that will allow you to execute cron on a Drupal site. As I have noted previously execution of the cron file is an important task for any Drupal site. Many modules rely on cron for periodic processing of data including the core search and aggregator modules. Running cron also prompts the system to check for module updates.

Here's what I entered in the video. Be sure to replace the url with url of your site. wget -qO /dev/null http://yoursite.com/cron.php

This video is one in a series of videos I created called Getting The Most Out Of Dreamhost. If you're a current Dreamhost customer you probably already know how to do things like set up a domain or create a MySQL database so it may not be relevant to you. If you're considering Dreamhost I think the series offers a very good preview of how the web panel functions make it easy to launch new Drupal sites. There's also a discount code (LEARNDRUPAL2010) on that page that will save you $50 on a new Dreamhost web hosting account.

Note: Click the 'full screen' icon (to the left of the volume control) in order to watch online at full 1280x720 resolution.

The Nodequeue module is an incredibly useful module that allows you select individual nodes and place them in a list in whatever order you like.
Install FCKeditor Using WYSIWYG API

This video tutorial shows how to install FCKeditor using the WYSIWYG API module. WYSIWYG makes it easy to install the most popular content editors on a Drupal site.

Note: Click the 'full screen' icon (to the left of the volume control) in order to watch online at full 1024x768 resolution.

UPDATE: Please take note that newer versions of the WYSIWYG API module require that the editor files get placed in the sites/all/libraries folder. This folder probably doesn't exist on your web server so you should create it if it does not exist.

In this tutorial I show you some simple ways of creating a more custom look on the front page of your site. All blog posts are demoted from the front page. Blocks are moved into different regions allowed by the theme. A node is created specifically for the front page. Finally, I show you how to make some basic changes to the tpl.php template file so that you can have a front page that doesn't require any nodes to be published on it.

This video tutorial shows you very basic methods for adding embedded video, photos and audio to posts on your Drupal site. FCKeditor and IMCE (which we installed in a previous lessons) are two contributed modules involved in the process.

The Yahoo! Easy Listener music player is used to embed the audio that we upload to the site. You'll also see how the file upload and local php.ini settings are adjusted to support uploading mp3 files up to 10MB in size.

Note: Since the production of this video the Yahoo! Easy Listener music player has been discontinued so you will need to utilize another flash player to successfully embed audio using this method.

Installing Drupal On A Localhost

Lesson One of my special Getting Started With Drupal series of instructional videos.

This video shows how to install Drupal to a localhost on a Windows based computer. Wampserver is used to create the proper environment.

UPDATE: Be aware that if you install the latest version of Wampserver and combine it with Drupal 6.13 or above you will likely get the following error. Deprecated: Function ereg() is deprecated in C:\wamp\www\drupal\includes\file.inc on line 902

The error is caused by the fact that the newer version of Wampserver utilizes version 5.3 of PHP and the latest version of Drupal does not support PHP 5.3. You can remedy the issue by installing an earlier version of Wampserver that has the 5.2 branch of PHP. Wampserver 2.0h (found at this link) includes PHP 5.2.9-2. Another option is to use another stack installer such as the Acquia Drupal Stack Installer.

Understanding Input Formats

From time to time people will ask me questions about problems they are having with content not displaying properly in nodes. Site developers may have problems displaying images, javascript, flash and php code. The problem is usually related to the input format chosen when publishing the node. The following video provides a very detailed look at how input formats work within Drupal.

Quicktime Video

Input Format Basics

There are three "out of the box" input formats for Drupal. These formats can be found on your site at admin/settings/filters.

Filtered HTML - This format allows very basic text input and some HTML. This is a good format for comments and user generated content since it limits the ability of the user to add malicious code to the node.

Full HTML - This format allows the full range of HTML tags including <embed> codes that are typically used for inserting widgets or embedded videos. This is my preferred format as a site administrator for creating all nodes and blocks on my sites. You can open this up to site users but it's recommended only for logged in users that have accounts at your site.

PHP Code - This format allows the posting of PHP code. This is used to customize the nodes on your site. There is a gallery of PHP snippets on Drupal.org where you can find examples thay may help extend the features of your site. This is a format that should only be available to admin users of the site. Opening up the PHP format to users jeopardizes the security of the site. So take great care when using this format.

The input formats in Drupal are highly customizable so you're not stuck with the exact formats that come standard with Drupal. Since these input formats greatly effect how and what content is posted to your site it is definitely a worthwhile investment of time to get to know them better.

Site developers may have problems displaying images, javascript, flash and php code. The problem is usually related to the input format chosen when publishing the node. The following video provides a very detailed look at how input formats work within Drupal. Quicktime Video Input Format Basics There are three "out of the box" input formats for Drupal. </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>drupal,cms,screencast,howto</itunes:keywords>

I conducted this interview a few months ago at DrupalCampNYC. Arthur Foelsche from Civic Actions talks about the future of Drupal modules that assist with the publishing of rich media. Arthur is the lead developer of the Media Mover module, XSPF Playlist, FLV Media Player and others that greatly assist with the publishing of video on Drupal sites.

This video explains triggers and actions which are new features in Drupal 6.
